Alkaloids are organic compounds produced naturally by plants containing nitrogen (such as kratom). They are responsible for kratom’s effects. 

The two most significant alkaloids found in kratom are:

• Mitragynine – The most abundant alkaloid in kratom, responsible for the majority of its reported effects. Strains with a higher mitragynine content are often considered stronger.
• 7-Hydroxymitragynine – Present in much smaller quantities than mitragynine but more potent by weight. Strains with higher concentrations of 7-hydroxymitragynine are typically described as having greater potency.

• Leaf maturity – Older leaves tend to have higher alkaloid concentrations.
• Geographic origin – The same strain grown in Thailand vs. Indonesia may have different alkaloid levels.
• Harvest season – Climate conditions impact alkaloid development in kratom trees.

Processing Method

The way kratom leaves are harvested, dried, and fermented can significantly influence potency and alkaloid composition.

• Sun-Drying vs. Shade-Drying: Exposure to sunlight can break down certain alkaloids, leading to variations in potency.
• Fermentation (e.g., Bentuangie Kratom): This process alters the alkaloid profile, sometimes making kratom stronger or giving it different characteristics.
• Blending Strains: Some vendors mix different kratom types (e.g., Maeng Da) to create hybrid strains with increased alkaloid strength.

As you likely know by now, kratom strains are classified based on their vein color. That color is determined by the maturity of the leaves and how they are processed after harvesting. And as explained above, those are also the two key factors defining the strain’s alkaloid profile.

This is why different strains offer different potency levels and commonly experienced properties.

Red Vein Kratom – Harvested from the most mature kratom leaves, red vein strains typically have a higher concentration of 7-hydroxymitragynine. This makes them the most potent and, therefore, favorite strains among experienced users.

Green Vein Kratom – Considered a middle-ground strain, green vein kratom has a balanced alkaloid composition. It is often described as moderate in potency, making it a common choice for beginners and long-term users alike.

White Vein Kratom – Derived from younger leaves, white vein strains tend to have higher levels of mitragynine, the dominant alkaloid in kratom.

Yellow Vein Kratom – Not a naturally occurring vein color but instead the result of special drying or fermentation techniques. Yellow kratom is often considered milder but can vary significantly in potency.

The truth is that kratom strength is subjective. Still, some strains have a reputation for higher potency based on alkaloid content and user reports.

Maeng Da, meaning “pimp grade” in Thai, is arguably the most recognized kratom strain. It is also highly potent. Unlike naturally occurring kratom strains, Maeng Da kratom is selectively cultivated to have a higher concentration of alkaloids, making it one of the strongest kratom varieties available.

Maeng Da is also genetically modified through a process called grafting, where different kratom strains are combined to create a more resilient and potent plant. This results in a powerful kratom strain with high levels of mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine.

Red Bali kratom is one of the most widely available red strains, kicking a serious punch due to its higher concentration of 7-hydroxymitragynine. This alkaloid is found in lower concentrations in most kratom strains, but Red Bali has one of the highest levels among red vein varieties.

Bali kratom is grown in Indonesia, primarily on the island of Bali. The island's hot, humid climate helps increase alkaloid production, resulting in a powerful red strain that’s a favorite among kratom veterans.

White Thai kratom (as the name suggests) originates from Thailand, where native kratom trees are known to have higher-than-average mitragynine content. Many users report that White Thai is one of the most potent white vein strains, setting it apart from others in this category.

The strain’s strength comes from its high mitragynine-to-7-hydroxymitragynine ratio making it unique among white vein strains. This distinct alkaloid balance gives it a reputation for being stronger than standard white vein kratom varieties.

What sets Bentuangie kratom apart from other strains is the fact that it undergoes a fermentation process, which changes its alkaloid composition. This post-harvest fermentation enhances certain alkaloids, making it unique compared to traditional kratom strains.

During fermentation, the leaves are left in a warm, humid environment, which increases specific alkaloid concentrations. This process results in a smoother, high-potency strain that some users prefer over standard red vein kratom.

Green Malay kratom originates from Malaysia and is one of the longest-lasting and most potent green vein strains. It is known for its exceptionally high mitragynine content, making it a popular high-potency green vein choice.

Unlike other green vein kratom, Green Malay is slow-dried and processed differently, which helps preserve its high alkaloid content. Many kratom users find that Green Malay is more potent and longer-lasting than other green strains, which are usually associated with more balanced properties. 

Determining the strongest kratom strain depends on factors like alkaloid composition, processing methods, and individual response. 

While the options we listed above—Maeng Da, Red Bali, White Thai, Bentuangie, and Green Malay—are often considered the “most powerful” strains, kratom strength is subjective. Who knows, maybe you’ll come across strains that may feel stronger than the ones we discussed today.
